The PCS Independent Left have organised a meeting that is open to all PCS members. Initially the meeting was to launch a solidarity campaign for PCS members with the Spanish Miners who were on an all out strike against the Rajoy government’s austerity measures to cut subsidies to coal mines. This will have a similar effect to the brutal coal mine closures by the British Tories that resulted in the Great Miners strike of 1984-5 and the destruction of mining communities.
Unfortunately the majority of miners have had to return to work due to lack of funds, although some mines are still being occupied at the time of writing. We will still go ahead with the meeting as we think it is important to learn from the experience of our brothers and sister resisting austerity across Europe. As far as we can tell this was the first all out strike against austerity measures during the current crisis.
Please come along and hear John Cunningham, a former miner during the 84-5 strike and member of the Spanish Miners Solidarity Committee, speak about the struggle on Tuesday 11 th September at the Exmouth Arms pub, 1 Starcross St, Euston, London NW1 2HR from 6:30 to 8:30.
